Regulative framework

The regulations for international exchanges depend on the framework or programme in which they are organized, e.g. Erasmus, Erasmus Belgica, Leonardo, facultary exchange agreements, etc. However, all exchanges must occur within the framework of a written agreement between K.U.Leuven and the exchange student’s home institution.

Definition

Exchange students remain registered at their home institution while they spend a limited period of time (usually from one semester to one full academic year) at K.U.Leuven. This stay and period of study shall be accorded full academic recognition by the students' home institutions.

Status

Status in Belgium:

  • EEA citizens must register with the municipal authorities once they are enrolled at K.U.Leuven.

Status at K.U.Leuven:

  • They have the status of "student" and must enrol at the Registrar’s Office.  They receive permission to enrol from the International Office.

Research type

They participate in a study programme stipulated by their exchange co-ordinators at K.U.Leuven and at their home institution. 

Financing

No K.U.Leuven scholarships are available. Depending on their exchange programme, students can apply for a scholarship at their home institution.

Status concerning the immigration authorities

No work permit is required.

Required insurance

  • Health insurance: European health insurance card.
  • Insurance for personal third party civil liability: optional, 13 euro.

Determined by the exchange framework or programme in which the students participate.
