Regulative framework
If the conditions for the allocation of a doctoral scholarship are not met, the international researcher may be appointed as a research associate (BAP) or an assistant (AAP) financed with a salary that must equal the net salary of an assistant.Definition
This form concerns highly qualified (with a doctorate or similar qualification) EEA citizens who conduct project-bound postdoctoral research in a secondary relation at the university. They must receive a salary that is equal to the salary of an assistant.Status
Status in Belgium:- With respect to the Belgian government, they have the status of employees. Employees only have the right to reside in Belgium if, in a foreign country, they have received an authorisation for a provisional sojourn (visa type D) at the Belgian embassy/consulate in the country in which they legally reside and are registered in the Foreigners’ Register upon their arrival (BIVR).
It is recommended to start the visa application procedure at least three months before departure to Belgium. The Human Resources Department co-ordinates all the visa related administration and draws up the hosting agreement. Residence is limited to the duration of the hosting agreement.
- They have the status of "employee" and are registered at the Human Resources Department as assistants (BAP/AAP).
- Upon registration at the Human Resources Department, they receive all the necessary certificates for their stay at K.U.Leuven and residence in Belgium. They must present themselves to the municipal offices within 8 business days.

Status concerning the immigration authorities
A hosting agreement is required.Residence in Belgium is limited to the duration of the hosting agreement.

Required insurance
- Accident and third party civil liability: as employee
- Health insurance: as employee, required registration with a Belgian health insurance company.
- Insurance for personal third party civil liability: Not obligatory, but strongly recommended.
