De Bibliografie van de Geschiedenis van de Universiteit Utrecht (BiGUU)

Sinds 3 september 2001 is een elektronische bibliografie betreffende de geschiedenis van de Utrechtse universiteit 'in de lucht': BiGUU. Deze bibliografie is gemaakt en wordt in stand gehouden onder verantwoordelijkheid van de Utrechtse Commissie Geschiedschrijving. De uitvoering is in handen van de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Begonnen is met het invoeren van de titels uit de drie delen van de gedrukte bibliografie van Evers, waarvan het laatste deel in 1951 verscheen. Daarnaast is een bestand gemaakt door Herve Jamin en aangevuld door Leen Dorsman (ca. 300 titels) over de laatste 15 jaar ingevoerd. Op het moment van ingebruikneming bestond de database uit ca. 4000 titels. Aan alle titels zijn trefwoorden gehecht zodat op verschillende manieren kan worden gezocht.

De twee genoemde bestanden (Evers en Jamin/Dorsman) vormen echter een begin. In het najaar van 2001 is een retroproject gestart om de tussenliggende jaren 1951-1985 te ontsluiten en de andere bestanden te optimaliseren. Niet alleen gedrukt materiaal zal worden opgenomen, maar ook audiovisueel materiaal. Besloten is in principe geen krantenberichten op te nemen, al zijn uitzonderingen mogelijk. Hetzelfde geldt voor bronnenmateriaal en interne rapporten e.d. Zoveel mogelijk zal geprobeerd worden ook specifiek 'Utrechtse' informatie in publicaties over andere universiteiten te ontsluiten. Lastig blijkt de selectie te zijn over individuele Utrechtse geleerden, waar vakinhoudelijke debatten en een historische benadering zich vaak met elkaar vermengen.

De bibliografie BiGUU is ondergebracht bij de Universiteitsbibliotheek en beschikbaar via de startpagina van de UB: http://www.library.uu.nl onder 'Gegevensbestanden'. Tevens kan doorgeklikt worden via de geschiedenispagina van de Universiteit Utrecht: http://www.uu.nl en wel via 'de universiteit', 'profiel en organisatie', 'geschiedenis'.

Distributielijsten voor universiteitsgeschiedenis

Het Italiaanse centrum voor de geschiedenis van de Italiaanse universiteiten (CISUI), dat gevestigd is in Bologna, deelt mee dat er nu ook een Italiaanse discussielijst bestaat die zich vooral richt tot de universiteitshistorici in Italië. We willen er ook nogmaals op wijzen dat er naast de Nieuwsbrief Universiteitsgeschiedenis op het Internet ook een meer internationaal gericht, elektronisch nieuwskanaal bestaat. Wie dat wil kan participeren aan de elektronische distributielijst STUDIUM. Via dit meer internationaal gericht medium worden berichten rondgestuurd die door de deelnemers aan de lijst naar het lijstadres gestuurd worden. Wie een idee wil over de inhoud van deze berichten, kan een kijkje nemen op de elektronische archieven van de lijst: http://listserv.cc.kuleuven.ac.be/archives/studium.html

Wel is STUDIUM een geredigeerde lijst: berichten kunnen enkel door de lijstbeheerder geplaatst worden, zodat de lezers gevrijwaard blijven van overbodige elektronische reclame of nietszeggende berichten (een service die door de deelnemers steeds erg geapprecieerd werd). Dat wil niet zeggen dat de leden geen berichten kunnen insturen: de meeste mededelingen worden door participanten naar het lijstadres (studium@listserv.cc.kuleuven.ac.be) gestuurd, van daar automatisch via electronica naar de lijstbeheerder doorgestuurd en verder naar de lijst ter distributie. Wie deel wil nemen kan dat door eenvoudig zijn verlangen via e-mail kenbaar te maken aan Marc Nelissen (marc.nelissen@bib.kuleuven.ac.be), onder vermelding van het e-mail adres en de naam waarmee hij op de lijst wenst ingeschreven te worden.

Hilde Symoens verlaat Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

en wordt voltijds hoogleraar in Gent

Op donderdag 27 september 2001 nam Hilde Symoens (De Ridder-Symoens) afscheid als hoogleraar in de geschiedenis van de Middeleeuwen aan de faculteit der Letteren van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Bij die gelegenheid hield ze een opmerkelijke rede met de titel Nieuwe wijn in oude zakken, of toch niet? De Bologna-verklaring in historisch perspectief (de tekst wordt nog gepubliceerd).

Sinds 1 oktober 2001 werkt Hilde Symoens voltijds als gewoon hoogleraar  Nieuwe Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Gent

International Committee for University Museums & Collections (UMAC)

A new division in the International Council of Museums

UMAC is a forum for all those working in, or associated with, academic museums, galleries and collections (including herbaria and botanical gardens). UMAC is concerned with the role of collections within higher education institutions and the communities they serve. It provides its members with a forum to identify partnership opportunities concerning the resources in the collections, to share knowledge and experience, and to enhance access to the collections. The aim is to protect the heritage in the care of universities. UMAC communicates with its members through all available means throughout the year in order to deliver its aims. UMAC, when required, advises ICOM and other professional bodies on matters within its jurisdiction.

UMAC strives to: 

• Clarify the role, requirements and relationships of university museums and collections with the university and its communities 

• Assist the preservation of academic and cultural heritage

• Promote university museums and collections within governments and their agencies, institutes of learning, the broad museum sector, the professions, business and the population generally

• Provide advice and guidelines for those collections which are emerging, isolated, deteriorating or otherwise in need

• Facilitate international and regional collaboration to stimulate networking, partnerships and research and to initiate exchanges of artifacts, exhibitions, standards, practices and other information

• Encourage staff in charge of university collections to participate in museological training, mentorship and career development

UMAC has five working groups. If you would like to be involved with the work of any group, please contact the Chair in the first instance.

Group A - Directories

Agenda: To collect information about the existing directories/catalogues/ inventories; accumulate the basic information, contact responsible persons and analyse the results. The thrust is to identify what has been done and add to it. The UMAC website could be used as a focus for a starting point.

Group B - Ethics and Disposal

Agenda: To have input into the ungoing ethics revision process being conducted by ICOM; to formulate practical guidelines by collecting the policies of different institutions and selecting the most useful for university purposes. The aim is to produce guidelines for universities on de-accessioning, ownership and similar topics.

Group C - Staffing

Agenda: To identify the special occupational group, 'university museum and collection staff', to list their needs (or the minimum needs for professionalisation), and to raise their profile. The two Australian publications Cinderella Collections and Transforming Cinderella Collections contain useful starting points for this agenda. The aim is to encourage universities to: 

• assist their museum staff to upgrade their museological qualifications

• initiate staff development plans in cooperation with museums in the public sector

• support exchange of staff within and between university museums and other museums

• raise standards of professionalism among university museums and collections staff

Group D - UMAC Conferences 2002/2003

Agenda: The organisation of UMAC Conferences in 2002 and 2003. Offers of places to hold future UMAC conferences have been received from Poland, Portugal, Israel and Australia. Given that it is important that conferences are held across the globe in areas where there is a concentration of members and that ICOM General Assemblies are being or will be held in Spain and Korea (in 2004) it was decided to hold the UMAC 2002 conference in Sydney, Australia. The 2003 conference will be held in a place decided by the American UMAC members (but not necessarily held in the Americas). It was noted that funds were probably available if a conference was held in Israel. 

The timing of the 2002 Conference will be in the period late August to November. Funds will be sought to subsidise the attendance of at least one member from a developing country. A suggested title was University Museums, showcases of intellectual, cultural and social capital.

Group E - Recognition for University Collections within Tertiary Institutions and Governments

Agenda: After obtaining a foot within the professional museum world (UMAC/ICOM), the next step is to work towards the same kind of recognition within the academic and political worlds (including the EC). The group may also liaise with Patrick Boylan to formulate a Recommendation for the EC on the Academic Heritage (including movable, immovable and intangible heritage).

The first meeting of UMAC was held in Barcelona on 2-4 July 2001. The general theme was 'Intensifying Support For and Increasing Audiences in University Museums and Collections'.
