International Association for Catholic Social Thought

Mission Statement

As a tradition of thought about human nature and purpose, society, politics, culture and economy, Catholic Social Thought comprises two streams: (a) as a body of official Catholic Social Teaching (CST), expressed mainly through papal encyclicals, also in counciliar declarations, and statements by regional or national bishops' conferences; and (b) contributions by individual Catholic thinkers and by connected institutions, movements or groups dedicated to both reflection and action (henceforward 'Catholic non-official social thinking' or CNOST).

The association for Catholic Social Thought is an organisation of scholars and experts in CST/CNOST whose collaboration is aimed at:
  • promoting scientific research into catholic social thought with a special focus on non-official catholic social thinking (CNOST)
  • improving the teaching of catholic social thought and the development of catholic social thinking at universities, institutes of higher learling, departments of theology and seminaries
  • extending the knowledge of catholic social thought and promoting the development of catholic social thinking among christians involved in social work, seminaries, justice and peace commissions, pax Christi and so on
  • engaging in ecumenical and interreligious projects concerning sociale ethics
  • stimulating interaction and transdisciplinary dialogue with experts in political philosophy, economic theory, culture, business and finance
  • engaging in ecumenical projects about the social commitment of christians
  • contributing to the development of Catholic social thinking in the Catholic Church

The steering committee will translate this mission statement into "smart" (specific, measurable, achievable and realistic in time) objectives and research projects
