Mathias Nebel

3. Scrutinizing the Signs of the Times in the Light of the Gospel | | Auteur(s): Johan Verstraeten , ed Conscious of the need to revisit the pastoral constitution of Vatican II, the Centre for Catholic Social Thought at the Catholic University of Leuven has organised two international expert seminars. 4.

7. Marx is dead, Jesus comes back | | Auteur(s): Pierre Deusy The book :
Up to the collapse of the soviet block, the Catholic Church was trapped into an impossible choice between Capitalism and Marxism. In order not to favour the latter, which represented, so She believed, a more direct and radical threat, the Church only whispered its critics to Capitalism. In a world where no other serious alternative remains, will She be able to be both more vocal and more listened to? Will She become Capitalism’s best enemy?

9. Modern Catholic Social Teaching. The Popes Confront the Industrial Age 1740-1958. | | Auteur(s): Joe Holland The Industrial Revolution, with its bourgeois ideology of laissez-faire liberalism created by the modern Euro-pean Enlightenment, posed a strategic challenge to the Catholic Church. This history of Catholic Social Teaching begins by telling how the “pre-Leonine” popes (i.e., before Leo XIII) resisted the often anti-clerical bourgeois democratic movement of the Enlightenment and defended the aristocratic ancient regime of Euro-pean Christian Civilization against liberalism’s secularizing laissez-faire assault. Then the book narrates how these popes’ counter-revolutionary battle collapsed during the papacy of Pius X, and how the 1878 election of Pope Leo XIII brought a dramatic shift in papal strategy.

Theological Ethics in Dialogue : Festschrift Roger Burggraeve | | Auteur(s): Johan De Tavernier, Joseph Selling, Paul Schotsmans, Johan Verstraeten (eds) A generation of students at the Faculty of Theology of the K.U.Leuven have been introduced by Roger Burggraeve to the thoughts of Emmanuel Levinas. All those who attended Burggraeve's courses in fundamental moral theology have become familiar with the idea that "responsibility preceedes freedom". He incorporated Levinas's "me voici" , this view on responsabilty in his personal life : he outlined his ethics of growth, inviting people o aim towards human meaningfulness; but develops his ethics of realistic growth in the light of mercy. The ethics of minus bonum. Finally, in a remarkable tribute to his fellow Salesian, Xavier Thévenot, Burggraeve describes that humility is an intregal part of any ethical intervention.

Bibliografieën 1. Catholic Social Thought: Renovating The Tradition | | Auteur(s): Francis P McHUGH The aim of the book is primarily to introduce students to religious and secular literature on Christian social thought, but to do so through a programme which will help to recover and rehabilitate a useful tradition of social thought qua theory. A further purpose is to attract secular thinkers to a critical exploration of a tradition of social thought which adjudicates the claims of modern secular reason and offers an alternative, long-reflected social awareness in moral thinking, one which has anticipated much of the recent theological turn in sociology.
