Point out the policeman

In November, student police inspector Nick Vanden Bussche co-organised an action in which passers-by whose bicycle lights didn’t work were given either on-the-spot repairs or two new bike lights, completely free of charge. Vanden Bussche graduated from the law programme at K.U.Leuven a few years ago and has been the student inspector since 1 September 2009, a job that serves to lower the threshold between students and the police. “I have open office hours at lunchtimes every week, which makes the service more approachable for students”, Vanden Bussche tells us. “It is striking that increasing numbers of students come to me for information or advice, for example about the rules of hosting parties at student houses. Our work is starting to yield very positive results – although students sometimes just come to complain about being fined for something (laughs).”
