A team of Leuven professors has successfully developed a compact, portable device that converts brain signals into words and sentences. The ‘mind speller’ has been awarded the SWIFT Prize of the King Baudouin Foundation – a grant of 50,000 euro. This demo video shows researcher Nikolay Chumerin spelling his name.

On 24 November, K.U.Leuven awarded an honorary doctorate to Willem P. Roelandts, the retired Chair of the Board and CEO of Xilinx, Inc., in recognition of his introduction of a management philosophy in semiconductor business, stimulating innovation and establishing a culture focused on human values.

“I decided early on that innovation is the only differentiating factor you can have”, honorary doctor Roelandts says in this interview. “You have to have people who trust in the company because innovation implies taking risks. Therefore, you have to have a style of management that is people-oriented.”

On 13 November, the new American ambassador to Belgium, Howard Gutman, visited K.U.Leuven. He delivered a speech to a packed Promotion Hall and afterwards visited the Central University Library.

On 25 June, the inauguration of the James E. Kearney Memorial Fund took place. The fund supports the research of Professor Stefaan Van Gool, which is related to the use of immunotherapy to treat malignant brain tumours.
