Project description

Participation and Representation are concepts that have been at the centre of political debates and  political theory for a few decades. This debate refers to (still ongoing) structural changes in the way citizens are linked to the process of political decision-making. These changes raise a large number of questions that are extremely relevant for modern political science. The main research question for this inter-university research project is how the processes of participation and representation are being affected by these social changes and in turn what effect participation and representation have on the legitimacy of democratic government. We investigate among other things political representation, political trust, party members, political participation, protest movements, voting choices, political deliberation,.. . This project has developed three major research instruments namely a panel survey for the regional elections of 2009 in Belgium, an international survey of members of national and regional parliament and a survey of party members. The project is part of an Inter-University Attraction Pole, i.e. a network of excellence set up by the Federal Belgian Science Agency.
