Soetkin Verhaegen joined the Centre for Citizenship and Democracy as a Ph.D fellow in September 2011. She is a member of the ‘Parent Child Socialization Survey’-project. Her research focusses on European citizenship and identity among youngsters and their parents. It is argued that it is important for a democracy to consist of citizens who are informed about and feel attached to the political entity to which they belong. The fields of actions of the European Union are increasing, but is the loyalty of its citizens increasing too? How do people perceive the concept of European citizenship? Is this different for young people and their parents? Do they influence each other? These are among the questions aimed to be answered.
