Research topic
| Within the social sciences there is a broad consensus
about the importance of mass participation as a defining
characteristic of a well-functioning liberal democratic
system. Within the context of the emerging information
society and the growing importance of the internet in
Western societies, various theories have been formulated
about the political impact and the democratic potential
of the internet. In my PH.D I disentangle
the impact of ICT on the democratic character of participation
by focusing on the political use of the internet, the
www as campaign and mobilization tool for political parties
and social movements, and on the social identities within
the cyberculture.
