The research domains of our Centre are embedded in current international theoretical debates about the transformation of liberal democracies. Given the complexity of these problems, our Centre is very keen to develop comparative and interdisciplinary research projects, and encouraging international exchange of scholars and insights has always been a priority for the Centre. In fact, we continue an old Leuven tradition: when the University was first established in the year 1425, scholars and students moved around quite frequently between, e.g., the universities of Leuven, Paris, Padua, Bologna, Pisa, Rostock and Tübingen. We continue this century-old Leuven tradition, both by receiving our international guests and by encouraging scholars to gather new insights abroad. Our aim is to strengthen a truly international research community on salient topics like political trust, social capital and political participation.
