Tracheal allotransplantation

In its issue of 14 January 2010, the reputable medical journal ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’ reported
that a team at the University Hospital of K.U.Leuven, led by Prof. Dr. Pierre Delaere, succeeded in performing
the first vascularized trachea transplantation. The transplantation took place in September 2008.
Publication of the case was withheld for one year, pending the withdrawal of the immunosuppressive medication.
This new technique opens perspectives for patients with stenosis of the airways, which is very difficult to treat.
