Closure of tracheostomy

 

The tracheostomy can be closed after full recovery of speech, swallowing, and respiration. This is usually 6 weeks after the second operation. Closure of the tracheostomy is a minor operation under local or general anesthesia. Hospital stay after tracheostomy closure is 1 to 2 days.

What to expect after tracheostomy closure?

- Solids and liquids can be swallowed without aspiration.
- Breathing occurs through the mouth and nose.
- Hand free speaking is possible.
