About larynx cancer

Limitations in functional surgery for laryngeal cancer

A total laryngectomy is frequently done for tumors involving only 1 side of the larynx because of the inability to repair the created defect after removal of the tumor.

The gray colored area indicates a tumor on 1 side of the larynx. The bright colored area indicates the amount of resection that is necessary to remove the tumor. This laryngeal defect can not be reconstructed with currently available repair tissues.

A chondrosarcoma is visible in the subglottic area. The bright colored area indicates the amount of resection that is necessary to remove the tumor. This laryngeal defect cannot be reconstructed with currently available repair tissues.

Experimental and clinical research has shown that TRACHEAL AUTOTRANSPLANTATION can succeed in reconstruction of the 2 laryngeal defects.
