‘Bharata Natyam’ – South-Indian dance by Antonia Volodina
Bharata Natyam emerged from centuries-old South-Indian temple dancing. It is characterized by a harmonious combination of sculptural poses, fluid movements, rhythmic footwork, and sublime expression. Dancer Antonia Volodina was already initiated into Bharata Natyam by the age of five, and has mastered all facets of this refined form of dance and theatre. Especially for UUR KULtUUR (K.U.Leuven Culture Hour), Antonia will be accompanied live by percussionists from the ‘Nandi Taalaavaadhya Academy’ of Bangalore.

Dance with Cristina Blanco ‘cUADRADO_fLECHA_pERSONA qUE cORRE’
The Spanish choreographer Cristina Blanco created her first solo ‘cUADRADO_fLECHA_pERSONA qUE cORRE’ in 2004. Ever since, this innovative performance has visited a number of leading international festivals. Now, you have the chance to see this inventive gem at UUR KULtUUR. Step into the spacious set built from pictograms, clothing labels, and signs found in buildings or public transportation. All these images are codes that confront us daily. Cristina Blanco brings the conventions of these functional representations to the surface. From an ironic perspective, she tackles the problem of social conditioning: the universal legibility of logos seems problematic, to say the least. She fashions fictional and realistic house, garden, and kitchen semiotics into an unpredictable performance with a hilarious climax.

‘Confrontations’ Wim Hendericxk and the Slagwerkensemble Conservatorium Amsterdam
With ‘Confrontations’, composer Wim Henderickx wants to enter into the confrontation between non-Western and Western percussion. African rhythm and dance are the source of his inspiration. Originally composed in Burkina Faso in 2003, the Slagwerkensemble Conservatorium Amsterdam is performing its version of ‘Confrontations’ for UUR KULtUUR. Two master drummers and two choruses, each with four percussionists, will give their all. It promises to be a challenging confrontation and a melding of two cultures.
