In comparative social research, one of the most important issues is the validity of the comparison among the comparative categories. More specifically, one has to make sure that the attitude, attribute, etc. of interest is measured invariantly across these categories. Several statistical techniques exist to assess the measurement invariance of Likert score items. This presentation provides an overview of such techniques, discusses their appropriateness and provides guidelines for the assessment of measurement invariance of Likert score items in substantive research.
