University of Warsaw awards honorary doctorate to professor emeritus Hans Hauben
The University of Warsaw awarded Professor Emeritus Hans Hauben an honorary doctorate on 11 January for his contributions in the field of ancient history.
Professor Emeritus Hans Hauben accepts an honorary doctorate from Professor Katarzyna Chalasinska-Macuko, Rector of the University of Warsaw.
Professor Hauben, a specialist in the Hellenistic history, religious history and papyrology, has maintained close ties with colleagues in Warsaw since the 1980's: "[The University of Warsaw] is a university with an exceptional reputation, especially in this discipline. During the period of communism, researchers did not always have it easy and I was happy to help with scholarships and exchanges. The cooperation agreement we established then, now slightly modified to fit the times, still exists. In turn, we also benefited from the advanced research being carried out by our Polish colleagues. We have always worked very well together."
Eventually, Professor Hauben turned his eye to the study of Polish history: "There are many parallels with Hellenistic history – as it happens, that was the topic of my laureate lecture today. I am very honoured to have received this distinction. It is the culmination of years of collaboration, but certainly not the end of it. In September, I will be returning to Warsaw to deliver a lecture, this time about the role of Cyprus in the Christianisation of the eastern Mediterranean."
