Howard White, Chief Executive Officer of the international Campbell Collaboration, is the keynote speaker at this colloquium. His lecture is open to the public. Everyone is welcome to attend.

It has become ever more challenging for policy makers to keep up with the scientific literature in a policy field. Systematic reviews carefully synthesize the outcomes of all relevant scientific evidence and summarize the findings of this research for policy makers. They are a very efficient method to obtain an overview about what works and what doesn’t in a particular policy field and therefore have the potential to significantly strengthen the evidence-base of government policies.

The Colloquium ‘Systematic Review: a tool for evidence-based policy’ discusses the possibilities of this analytical method to increase the quality of policy decisions by governments. The event, which will be held in Brussels on 28 March 2017, is organized jointly by professors Karin Hannes (Social Research Methodology Group at the Centre for Sociological Research) and Marleen Brans (KU Leuven Public Governance Institute), who specialize in systematic literature reviews and in evidence-based policies respectively.

Preliminary Programme

Keynote speaker at the Colloquium is Howard White, Chief Executive
Officer of the international Campbell Collaboration.

Both Howard White and the Campbell Collaboration have a wide experience assisting governments in the application of systematic reviews in various domains, such as social welfare, education, criminology and international development. They also advise a wide range of governments on how to strengthen policy decisions based on these reviews. In his keynote, White will illustrate the impact of Campbell reviews on policy decisions and the degree to which they have fostered decision making practices that are more evidence based.

Want to attend the public lecture?  Please send a mail to Ellen.fobe@kuleuven.be to sign up.

Following the keynote, participants can join one of two workshops.

Workshop 1 “Systematic reviews: concept & method” will treat in more detail the methodological aspects of this particular technique for analyzing scientific evidence. Participants will get a glimpse of how to carry out systematic reviews and the aspects that should therein be taken into account.

Workshop 2 “Evidence from the field: the use for systematic reviews in public policies” discusses the implementation of systematic reviews by governments. In this workshop, policy practitioners will reflect upon the practical implications of conducting systematic reviews.
