EU Research Projects
Welcome to the KU Leuven EU-team, your guide to European and international research and innovation projects. The KU Leuven EU-team informs and advises about the participation in European Research and Development Programmes and facilitates Innovation partnerships in Europe.
Some facts & figures:
In 2011, 8.4% of KU Leuven’s research expenses originated from international public funds, around 85% of this coming from the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP). As of April 2012, KU Leuven is conducting 393 projects under FP7 (2007-2013), including 35 prestigious European Research Council grants (ERC). KU Leuven currently ranks 5th in total FP7 funds awarded, after Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College and ETH Zürich.
Why international/European funding ?
The complex challenges facing Europe and the world demand significant resources and intelligent synergies in scientific research and technological innovation. This is why the European Union supports multicultural, trans-disciplinary projects that unite partners from different countries and professional backgrounds for the development of high quality knowledge. Such conditions are especially favourable for creative and efficient research. The many opportunities offered by the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP7) are there for the taking. With a budget of 53 billion euro, FP7 is the main instrument for scientific and technological cooperation in Europe. FP7 funds basic science and market-oriented research, applied development and researcher mobility fellowships.
