Thirtieth ET-Newsletter of the European Society for Catholic Theology  (06-12-2011)

ET-Kongress in Wien, August 2011

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sigrid Müller und Dr. Slavomír Dlugoš (Wien)

Nächster ET-Kongress in Brixen, 29.8.-1.9.2013

ET Newsletter in English

Dear ET members and all interested in ET,

As the new President of the European Society for Catholic Theology, I would like to welcome you all. Together with the ET Presidium, it is my task for the next two years to support European theologians in representing their common concerns and in strengthening one another for their work in church and society. Part of this task is to strengthen the international dimension of our Society and to promote the dialogue between East and West, North and South. We hope that many theologians will get involved with these issues.

First, in the name of all the members of our Society, I would like to express my sincerest thanks to Eamon Conway. In his role as first Vice-President after the changes to the Society’s statutes, he organised the 2009 Congress in Limerick, and then led the Society for two years as President. With great prudence, he continued our conversations with representatives of the Roman Dicasteries and he promoted the formation of new national sections. One of his main interests was to identify mistaken developments in the politics of education, which set theology as it is taught in the university within the aims of a free-market economy. We are delighted that in succeeding Peter Hünermann from 1 January 2012 as President of the Peter Hünermann Foundation – and in this role he will also be President on INSeCT – Eamon will remain tied institutionally to ET.

Prof. Dr. Sigrid Müller

ET Congress in Vienna, August 2011

Dear ET members and congress participants,

We have received very positive and encouraging feedback for the ET Congress in Vienna. We sincerely want to thank all the speakers for their excellent, stimulating papers on the topic of the Congress “Exploring the Boundaries of Bodiliness. Theological and interdisciplinary approaches to the human condition.” Most of the main papers can be found online on “You Tube”. Please search for “ET-congress 2011”. A wonderful report about the Congress has been published in Herder Korrespondenz.

Furthermore, I would like to thank all who presented papers during the parallel sessions and the thematic sessions, and for the interesting discussions and great conversations throughout the Congress (see the congress website).

The publication of the main papers and the parallel papers is scheduled for 2012. All those who presented papers will receive information concerning the publication at the end of November 2011.

The award of the prize for the best theological book in Europe has attracted much attention in the media.

Also, the Emerging Scholars’ Conference in Bratislava proved to be a very good experience for both doctoral students and professors. As they were so successful, we would like to repeat both the book prize and the Emerging Scholars’ Conference at the next ET Congress.

We would like to thank everybody who made the congress possible and we hope that you will retain fond memories of it.

On behalf of the whole Congress organisation team,

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sigrid Müller and Dr. Slavomir Dlugos (Vienna)

Next ET Congress in Brixen, 29 August – 1 September 2013

Dear ET members,

As Vice-President of our Society, I have the honour of hosting the next international Congress. I am already very much looking forward to welcoming you to Brixen, South Tyrol (Italy). We have already fixed the date; please reserve the dates 29 August to 1 September 2013. During the last meeting of the Presidium in Stuttgart, we decided on the following topic: “God in Question – religious language and secular language”. We would like to reflect how we, as theologians, can engage in conversations with non-believers, and we would like to ask how this dialogue can be characterized by listening to and learning from each other.

The Junior Conference will also take place in Brixen on 28 August 2013.

More information will follow later.

Meanwhile, you can get a first impression of Brixen and its philosophical-theological faculty.

Best wishes,

Martin M. Lintner OSM, Vice president ET

ESCT/INSeCT research project: Power abuse in the Catholic Church and wider Society

The International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology (INSeCT) has launched a 3-year, global research project on ‘the nature, function and location of theology, with particular attention to the power of theology to overcome power abuse in Church and Society’. Each member society is asked to interpret and respond to the project title in a way that is relevant to the contemporary realities of its region. All ESCT members interested in participating in the project, and/or being added to the project’s mailing list, should contact: stephen.bullivant@smuc.ac.uk (the sooner the better). Those interested in participating should give details of their interest and expertise. More details can befound on the ESCT homepage.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sigrid Müller and Dr. Slavomir Dlugos (Vienna)

Martin M. Lintner OSM, Vice president ET

ET Newsletter in italiano

Cari Soci AETC, cari Interessati,

Congresso AETC a Vienna, agosto 2011

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sigrid Müller und Dr. Slavomír Dlugoš (Wien)

Prossimo Congresso AETC a Bressanone, 29.8.-1.9.2013

Cari Soci AETC,

Helen CAMERON, Deborah BHATTI, Catherine DUCE, James SWEENEY and Clare WATKINS, Talking about God in Practice: Theological Action Research and Practical Theology (London: SCM, 2010) 192 pages; £19.99; ISBN: 978-0334043638.
Talking about God in Practice details the challenges and complexities of real theological conversations with practitioners, whilst providing an example of appropriate process, and a model of theological understanding by which to negotiate these complexities fruitfully. Drawing on, and adapting, action research methods, this process enables researchers with practitioners to access 'implicit' theologies, embedded within practices. The disclosure of the theology borne by practice enables a fresh and often exciting insight for all concerned, which leads to renewal of both practice and theology. The Theological Action Research process offers effective and mutually constructive ways of engaging practitioners and 'academics' in authentic research partnerships, contributing to the proper rootedness of theological scholarship, and to capacity building among practitioners for further, self-led research, reflection, and theologizing.

(Ecumenical Christianity: Christian Vocation in Protestantism)

In the history of Christianity, the teachings of various denominations and their distinguished representatives did not always use an explicit concept of vocation. However, the teaching of every denomination or its representative always contained one or another implicit idea regarding the Christian vocation. The objective of this study is to reveal the fundamental features of the Christian vocation in Protestantism.
The analysis of the Protestant understanding of Christian vocation revealed many positive aspects of theological thought. The possibilities for a variety of rightful interpretations of biblical Revelation were manifested, which gave birth to a wide scale of Christian phenomena. In many cases, new ideas manifested spontaneously, intensely and vitally, bringing positive results to social life. These, it can be asserted, revitalized the concept of the Christian vocation and provided it with new quality. Nonetheless, it is not possible to avoid seeing some unsuccessful and questionable innovations, which are unavoidable on the road of search.

The book „In the service of maturity of the faith and of growth of the persons - Reflections on religious education and catechetical issues in contemporary context ” deals with contemporary understanding of catechesis in the Church and theology, and shows different areas of catechetical reflection and action that characterize the current moment of the Church and society. The book consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with basic concepts and starting points of catechetical discourse. The second chapter presents a contemporary focus and the most discussed catechetical themes and religious-educational thinking in Europe and Croatia. At the same time it indicates the basic coordinates of catechesis and religious education in our time. The third chapter examines the state of catechesis in Croatia, based on empirical tests and insights obtained. The fourth chapter connects the catechesis of the Church and school religious education as a special place of the pedagogical service of the Church to young generations and society as a whole, focusing attention on the relationship between religious education in schools, the teacher of religion and parish communities. The last chapter shows the relevance and contemporary models of religious education in schools in a European context. It also illuminates those questions that all the new development in modern society, in education and in science ask the Church and its theology through the prism of religious education in schools.

Declan MARMION and Rik VAN NIEUWENHOVE, An Introduction to the Trinity (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2011) 251 pages; £16.99; ISBN: 978-0521879521.
Over the last decade there has been a resurgence of writing on the Trinity, indicating a renewal of ideas and debate concerning this key element of Christian theology. This introduction challenges the standard account of a decline and revival in Trinitarian theology, taking into account recent, alternative readings of the theological tradition by Lewis Ayres and Michel Barnes amongst other scholars. By clearly analysing the scope of these new approaches, the authors establish the importance of a sapiential understanding of the Trinity, resisting the notion of separating faith and reason and identifying theology’s link to spirituality. Their account also eschews the easy stereotypes of Western Christianity’s supposedly more Unitarian approach as opposed to the more Trinitarian view of the East. Offering an overview of the main people and themes in Trinitarian theology past and present, this book thus provides an accessible, comprehensive guide for students and scholars alike.

Michael O’SULLIVAN, How Roman Catholic Theology Can Transform Male Violence against Women: Explaining the Role of Religion in Cultural Assumptions about Gender (New York: Edwin Mellen Press, 2010) 432 pages; ISBN-10: 0773414487; ISBN-13: 978-0773414488.
This book articulates a Roman Catholic theological understanding concerning salvation in Jesus Christ that can be transformative of physical and sexual male violence against women across the world. It identifies key elements for a working definition of such complex violence, and highlights the pervasiveness and seriousness of the violence with quantitative data. For the Catholic believer the violence is graver still because a Catholic component can often be identified in the violence. This component is illustrated in the book by qualitative data about Catholic women who suffered incest. Employing the foundational and methodological framework of the praxis of authenticity in consciousness that Bernard Lonergan has identified, and that everyone can verify in their own experience, as well as its specifically Christian conversion component, the book provides grounds for making the situation of violence a theological matter. The book’s argument progresses by following Lonergan’s definition that theology functions to mediate between a religion and a culture and that the function of systematics in method in theology is to construct contextualised understandings for the sake of doing the truth in love. Theological meanings transformative of the situation of violence are elaborated in the book in terms of how to conceive salvation in Jesus Christ. Such an understanding of salvation is constructed by drawing firstly on meanings for salvation in scripture that are dialectically opposed to destructive meanings that the Catholic women, who suffered incest, referred to above received and believed concerning salvation. Insight into these biblical meanings is deepened by drawing on the theologies of salvation of Karl Rahner, Gustavo Gutierrez, and feminist responses to Gutierrez’s theology. The transformative meaning for salvation is developed further by addressing the issues of the male Jesus as saviour and his violent death of redemption in ways that can serve the struggle to stop male violence against women. The book ends by drawing attention to recent documents on male violence against women by Church leaders that make specific reference to a transformative role for theologians and by calling for third level theology colleges to take account of the pertinent violence as a theological imperative and to collaborate with others in a common field of concern as part of the function of theology.

Schumacher's Divine Illumination offers an original interpretation of Augustine's theory of knowledge, tracing its development in the work of medieval thinkers such as Anselm, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, and John Duns Scotus. Although Scotus is often deemed responsible for finally pronouncing Augustine's longstanding illumination account untenable, Schumacher shows that he only rejected a version that was the byproduct of a shift in the understanding of illumination and knowledge more generally within the thirteenth-century Franciscan school of thought. To reckon with the challenges in contemporary thought on knowledge that were partly made possible by this shift, Schumacher recommends relearning a way of thinking about knowledge that was familiar to Augustine and those who worked in continuity with him. Her book thus anticipates a new approach to dealing with debates in contemporary epistemology, philosophy of religion, and theology, even while correcting some longstanding assumptions about Augustine and his most significant medieval readers.

Norman Tanner, New Short History of the Catholic Church (London and New York, Continuum under Burns & Oates imprint, 2011) 280 pages; £16.99; ISBN: 978-0860124559.
This book is a one volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Full notice is taken of recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils, crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.
