Abstract

The principal aim of the lesson about he Belgian urban regions is to LEARN BY GIS. Nevertheless the lesson permits the teacher to highlight some basical concepts of GIS and the use and possibilities of a simple Desktop GIS.

As far as content is concerned, the material consists of

a diskette with data and basical maps. The diskette has data and maps in MapInfo-format (tabels and workspaces) since the lesson is written for use with MapInfo in the first place (ref. apeendix of the text). The same data and maps are on diskette in resp. Excel en Ascii, as to use them eventually with a different kind of software. The data on diskette contain also the hierarchical level of the Belgian cities for a comparable lesson about the structure of the Belgian urban network.

a complete lesson (word-file and hard copy) about the Belgian urban regions (spread, internal structure, causal relations with society), including the goals, the full guideline of the lesson and an appendix with output exemples and a guide about how to use the material with MapInfo. The text (42 pages) is written in Dutch.

Level and duration

This lesson is suitable for high school students of the last grade, with a programme scheduling urban geography and/or cartography and GIS.
If both topics are in the same programme, the lesson can cover both and can be seen as a GIS-based lesson about urban geography.

The material en lay-out of the lesson covers 2 lessons of 1 hour or 1 lesson of 2 hours.
