The research undertaken at the Institute for Social and economic geography covers the whole of social and economic spatial patterns and processes in Belgium. These topics are the subject of historical, present-day and prospective analysis.
Some of the research fields are also extended to parts or the whole of Western Europe and to Japan and China.

The Institute developed a very strong expertise in handling statistical data, mainly on the level of the municipalities and the statistical sectors. The construction and analysis of databases, the use of different classification and analysis methods (ex multivariate analysis, cluster analysis, spatial analysis, auto-correlation ...) and cartography (by GIS or DTM) make part of this know-how.

The Institute issues the following serials and journals

The library (WARD) is linked through the LIBIS-system to the other libraries of the university and Belgium. The library offers over 17.000 volumes and 300 current journals and statistical series.
