Over the last 30 years the Laboratory for Prehistory has been extensively studying the prehistory of Western and Central Europe. In Belgium new insight have been gained by excavations of sites attributed to the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic, the Mesolithic and the Neolithic. Raw material procurement systems, technology, typology and micro wear analyses of lithic materials were combined allowing for a better assessment of the functioning and organisation of Palaeolithic camps. Special attention was given to geoarchaeologial topics such as the quaternary stratigraphy and the influence of post-depositional movements of artefacts. Within the framework of an INQUA working group a database on the European Late Pleistocene Isotope Stages 2 & 3 is in construction. It is open to all bona fide researchers for importing and utilising the available data. Survey and excavations in the Egyptian and Sudanese Nile Valley and in the Red Sea Mountains gave the possibility of understanding the prehistoric, mainly Palaeolithic, occupation of the region.
