Huis facilities
Attention
If you do not agree or intend to comply with these conditions, please do not use these facilities.
1. Questions, problems, lost or found objects, thefts
You are always welcome at the secretariat with your questions, problems and lost or found objects. At the office you can also report thefts in the Huis (including bike stealing): Christel has special forms to be filled out in case of theft.
2. Mailboxes
Every room has its own mailbox in the passage near the gate. Please give your family and friends your mailbox number if they want to write you, so the mailman doesn't have too much trouble getting the mail in the right boxes. For security reasons we ask you to only put your last name on your mailbox. If you find other people's mail in your box, please be so kind to deliver it to them; if you don't know the addressee, you can bring the mail to the secretariat. The white mailboxes are special ones from the university's mailing service. DO NOT use them. For your outgoing mail you can use the red mailboxes around town.
3. Telephones
On every floor there's a telephone to receive calls.
Please give your relatives and friends the right phone number:
- ground floor: 016 32 94 23
- first floor: 016 32 94 24
- second floor: 016 32 94 25
Remember Time Zone Differences. Please ask people NOT to call you between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. (that is between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m. in the US, Eastern Standard Time).
Since the residence is connected to the internal phone system of the KU Leuven, you can call all internal numbers toll-free (5 digits, e.g. your department, a professor or a friend in another residence). These phones however cannot and should NOT be used for other outgoing calls. Never accept collect calls.
4. Bulletin boards
In the entrance hall (ground floor) you find bulletin boards. There's a board "LOYOLA INTERNATIONAL HOUSE" with announcements for all residents of the house; here you can post all kinds of messages, such as jobs, etc. Large announcements and posters should be shown to the secretariat for approval before posting them. The board "LOYOLA COLLEGE in MARYLAND" holds messages for the students of Loyola College (academics, etc...).
5. Fax / scanner
In special cases only, faxes can be sent or received at the office. Prices for sending faxes depend on the destination and are available at the secretariat. Receiving a fax costs €0.15 a page. There is also a scanner available at the office (€0,50 per page).
6. Laundry
Please read the instructions carefully and never force the doors open. Tokens can be obtained from the office every day from 9 to 12 a.m. A washer token is €3,50 and a dryer token €1,50. Don’t remove the ironing board. An iron can be obtained from the secretariat.
7. Computers
Please stick to the following rules when using the computers:
- The software available is MS-office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). It is absolutely FORBIDDEN to install or download other software on the computers. If you think there is a need for other programs, this has to be discussed with the director or associate director.
- It is not allowed to change any of the initial settings (WINDOWS, printer, etc...). If this does happen accidentally, please inform the secretariat.
- The computers have access to Internet via KULeuven’s Kotnet system, which is only accessible for KU Leuven (or affiliated) students.
- The use of the computers is restricted to residents of the Huis. If you are working on a paper, presentation, etc. with students who don’t live here, you should NOT let them work in the computer room alone. Students who don’t live here always have to be accompanied by a resident when using the computers.
- Never SAVE a document on the hard disc (disc drive c:), because you can loose your file, others can read and change your documents and after a while the computer's memory is full and it cannot function anymore. Therefore save your documents on your own media. The files illegally saved on the computer's hard disc will regularly be deleted.
- To PRINT a document, turn on the printer connected with your computer. DO NOT change the printer cables from one computer to the other. Only use regular printing paper, no slides, plastic or notebook paper. This will cause serious damage to the printer.
- Please EXIT all the programs in the proper way (also exit Windows!!) and TURN OFF the computers and printers after use.
- Please inform the secretariat in case of problems or questions.
- Paper is not automatically available for the printers. It is suggested that you buy a large package of paper (size A4) and keep it in your room. However, small amounts of paper can be purchased for €0.05 a page at the office.
8. Barbecue
Everyone is welcome to it on the following conditions:
- The barbecue is locked with a chain in the laundry room: one person has to sign for the key to open the chain : that person is responsible for putting the barbecue back in place after use. If the barbecue is stolen from the yard, this person is responsible and will have to replace it with one of the same quality and price. The barbecue loan form and key is available at the office. The use of the barbecue is restricted to Huis-residents.
- Music should never be played in the courtyard, for obvious reasons.
- For trash the garbage and recycle cans from the kitchens should be used.
- After use the grills should be scraped and the utensils should be cleaned thoroughly. Please let the ash and burning coal cool down completely and then return the barbecue to the laundry room.
- Between May 28 and July 2, 2011 the barbecue can only be used on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
9. Kotnet
The residence is wired for Internet. In the computer room two computers are connected to Internet, but also every room has a connection for Internet. If you bring or rent a computer, you can get a special cable from the secretariat to connect to Internet in your room. Problems with internet should be reported to KU Leuven’s ICTS Service Desk: https://admin.kuleuven.be/icts/english/servicedesk
10. Newspapers and magazines
The Huis has a subscription to Flanders Today, Time magazine and De Standaard. You can find these papers and magazines in the computer room.
11. First aid kit
This is available in the computer room by the photocopy machine. Please note in the booklet when you used it and what for. Christel is responsible for the first aid in the residence; she can help and advise you during her office hours.
12. Miscellaneous
Other items available for use: a bike pump, tennis rackets, a toolbox, a pair of crutches, and an electrical heater for the study room. These items can all be obtained at the office.
