Tidal Flat Eco-morphodynamics
The Hydraulics Laboratory of the K.U.Leuven is involved in tidal
flat eco-morphodynamics research since 2001. The research is conducted
within the framework of the following projects:

Monitoring Nature
Restoration in the Yzer Mouth Nature reserve (MONAY)
(Erik Toorman & Jaak Monbaliu) |

Data have been collected in order to study morphodynamic
and sedimentological changes of the tidal flats of the Yzer
Mouth Nature Reserve, which has been extended by demolition
of the former naval base. The data consisted of sediment
characteristics (composition of sediment samples and from
hyperspectral image processing, and erodibility using the
In-Situ Erosion Flume), sedimentation-erosion patterns (topographic
data from on-site measurements and a DTM from LIDAR data),
hydrodynamic and sediment transport measurements in the
navigation channel (for the set-up of a numerical model).
Duration: 1 July 2001- 30 June 2004 (3 years)

en Infrastructuur, Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap.
Hyperspectral data cubes, obtained in the framework of
the CASI-ATM hyperspectral flight campaign, were used to
characterize the different areas in the intertidal zone
of the Yzer-estuary.

Time-dependent
changes in the optical properties of sediments detected with
remote sensing (Tidesed) (Jaak Monbaliu & Suhyb Salama) |

Hyperspectral VIS, NIR and SWIR reflectances generated
by HyMAP are used to characterize the main intertidal sediment
habitat types occurring in the Westerscheldt Estuary. The
Molenplaat has been selected as case study area and was
overflow five times during the low tide period. The In-Situ
Erosion Flume (ISEF) has been deployed on site to measure
erosion characteristics and sediment samples have been taken
for further analysis.
The HyMAP flight took place in June 2004.

The processing techniques for hyperspectral images of
tidal flats in order to be able to obtain maps of soil classification
with discrimination of major grain classes and biota will
be further developed and refined. The data will be linked
to the erodibility of the surface as a function of geophysical
and biotic soil characteristics. Erosion tests will be carried
out in the laboratory and the field (using the In-Situ Erosion
Flume of the University of Utrecht or another in-situ erosion
device).
Duration: 4 years, starting 1 January 2005.
