Guido Vaes

Born at Hasselt, Belgium on January 20, 1969
Nationality : Belgian

Studies : Civil Engineering at the K.U.Leuven, Belgium from October 1987 till July 1992
Optional subjects : Sewer systems, unsteady flow, coastal engineering, tunnels.
MSc thesis : "The efficiency of storage sedimentation basins as a function of the design” together with Jorgen Hubrechts. Tests with tracers were carried out in a physical (scale) model. This thesis was awarded with the WATER 1992 award of WEL.

In September 1992 started as assistant of prof. Jean Berlamont at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the K.U.Leuven in the research field of sewer systems.

Research topics :

  • Numerical models for sewer system calculations, as well for design and flooding problems as for the assessment of the combined sewer overflow emissions. Development of a simplified model for the calculation of combined sewer overflow emissions. Comparison of models with different degree of detail and their effect on the accuracy of the simulation results.
  • Analysis of rainfall data with regard to the use for hydraulic and hydrological calculations. Determination of Intensity/Duration/Frequency-relationships and composite design storms. Selection of short rainfall series for design and impact calculations. Comparison of different types of rainfall input with regard to the effect on the accuracy of the simulation results. Analysis of the effect of source control (storage, infiltration and re-use) on the water input into the combined sewer systems.
  • Follow up of design aspects of ancillaries at combined sewer overflows and the impact of it on the receiving waters. Physical and numerical modelling of ancillary structures, as for instance storage sedimentation basins.
  • Expertises with regard to flooding problems caused by rainfall runoff and sewer systems.

PhD defended on July 8th 1999 entitled “The influence of rainfall and model simplification on the design of combined sewer systems” (promotor prof. J. Berlamont). This thesis was awarded with the WATER 2000 award of WEL.

post-doctoral researcher at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the University of Leuven till August 2004. Further research on the above mentioned topics with special attention to :

  • coupling with river modelling
  • source control measures
  • updated guidelines for sewer system design

Current job :

Project manager at HydroScan since March 2004.
