We organise a trip to Trier in Germany on Saturday the 12th of May.Trier is a 2000-year-old Roman city, the oldest city in Germany! It was home to six Roman emperors and has many ruins including the impressive Porta Nigra (the Black Gate) and which was once part of the city’s walls. "Roma Secunda", the second Rome, was another name for Trier. Nowhere else in Germany are Roman times so vividly recalled as here.
The Trier Cathedral (St. Peter Dom) is the oldest church in Germany. Other places of interest are the Roman Amphitheatre, the Imperial Baths from Late Antiquity with its gigantic hall and an extensive “plumbing” system; the huge Constantine Basilica, being the 67 m long throne hall of Roman Emperor Constantine today used as a Protestant church; the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), which is one of the most important early Gothic cathedrals in Germany and the Römerbrücke (Roman bridge) across the Moselle River, which is the oldest bridge north of the Alps still crossed by traffic.
During a guided walk through the city you will discover the main sights of interest.
In the afternoon you are free to visit the city on your own.
Practical information
The busses will leave from the parking lot at the Faculty Club - Waaiberg at 7.00 a.m. sharp. We plan to be back in Leuven around 9.00 p.m. depending on the traffic.
Bring your picnic lunch along.
-This activity is open only to people associated with the KULeuven. All non-EU citizens need to make sure to bring along their own, as well as their accompanying children’s passport. All EU-citizens should bring their identity card. At the German border customs might ask to see proof of identity.
Because the number of participants is limited we will register on a first come, first serve basis.
