  • History and mission statement
  • History

The Parliamentary Resolution of 9th April, 1946, formally established the University of Bergen. The University of Bergen Act came into effect on 30th August, 1946. By European standards the University of Bergen is a young university. However, its academic roots are deep. Research and teaching have long been fields of activity in Bergen's Museum, which was founded as far back as 1825.
The new University of Bergen was founded in 1946 with a basis in the Faculties of Medicine, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Arts. The University of Bergen was a new, modern alternative to a much more traditional university model that concentrated on long periods of study for the professions and the civil service.
In the course of the sixties and seventies a university education became a serious prospect for a large proportion of young Norwegians.
At the University of Bergen, student numbers rose from just over one thousand in 960 to almost 8 000 in 1975.
Most graduates found work in the public sector. The universities themselves became important consumers of academic manpower. The next major wave of students came in the nineties. Between 1987 and 1995 student numbers more than doubled from 8 700 to 17 800. In the light of the current labour market situation, one of the most important challenges facing the University of Bergen is to ensure that its graduates and its academic expertise can be utilized to a reater extent by the private sector.

    Mission statement:

The University of Bergen is both a teaching and research institution in most subjects, organized in seven faculties and some 90 departments and specialized centres.
    It’s a medium-sized university, with 17 000 students and 2 500 staff.
The University wants to be a meeting-place and a gateway to other sources of expertise, local, national and international. Their focus on international relations since the mid-eighties has profiled the University of Bergen as an international university in Norway, in line with the traditions of the city.
    Academic goals
"The University of Bergen aims to be a university of high international standard, and the leading Norwegian university in selected fields of competence. In certain areas of research, the University should be a centre of excellence at international level"
(From the principle objectives of the University Plan for 2000 – part 2:1987)
