- History and mission Statement
History
The University is one of the eldest Universities of the Netherlands, it was founded 23th August 1614. First as a college
with a hundred students a year (a very respectable number in that period!), almost half of them from other countries.
By the end of the 17th Century there was a stagnation. There were only two hundred students left and the University lost
its appeal for foreigners. In 1850 a new academic building was set up and the University got its current status by law.
Except for Latin, there could now also be lectured in Dutch. By the end of the 19th century the University attracted the
same amount of students as in its starting period. In 1914 there were 611 students, in 1924 a thousand. After 1945 there
was an explosive growth of students at the University, today the RUG still is a very popular University. There are ten
faculties situated in 150 buildings in town, 300 professors and more than 5000 staff members.
Mission statement
The University of Groningen (RUG° is a modern, international community of 18,500 students and 5,000 co-workers.
These people work together in a warm and open relationship to increase knowledge. For almost 400 years the RUG approaches
science and its relationship with the world in a commonsense, but inventive way. The RUG is a University of pioneers,
it didn’t only accept the first female student of the Netherlands, it also delivered the first Dutch astronaut and the
first president of the European central bank. Groningen is a place were people communicate, scientists from different
areas cooperate to achieve results that reach the international top. Apart from that Groningen is a very cosy town were
students and co-workers enjoy living.
- Academic Year
The university of Groningen uses a trimester system. Each academic year is divided into three periods of about 14 weeks,
de so-called trimesters. Each trimester there are at the most 11 weeks of lectures. From the 12th week onwards there aren’t
any lectures so students have the time to prepare their exams. The last weeks of each semester students have exams and have
to hand in papers.

- Admission and how to apply?
If you want to gain admission to a Dutch university on the basis of a foreign diploma, you have to find out to which
category your foreign diploma belongs. Depending on the category, the question if and how you can be admitted can be
answered.
Three categories are distinguished:
1. Foreign prospective students holding a pre-university diploma obtained in a country that has signed the European
Convention can be admitted to a Dutch university if their diploma qualifies for university education in their home country
as well
2. If you are from a country that did not sign the European Convention the university will compare your diploma with the
Dutch University Preparatory Certificate (VWO). Depending on the outcome of this comparison you can gain admission with
or without further entrance tests.
3. Several years of university education in your home country may lead to an exemption from parts of the Dutch university
curriculum.
At all universities in the Netherlands the language of instruction is Dutch. Seeking admission on the basis of a foreign
diploma, means that you must always give proof of your proficiency in this language before you can enroll as a student.
Most foreign students have to pass the official "NT2-II-exam" (Dutch as a second language, level 2) administered by the
Informatie Beheer Groep, afdeling Onderwijsdiensten 3 times a year: in December, April and July. You have to sign up for
the exam 3 months in advance. The registration fee is Dfl. 120. Registration forms are available at the Informatie
Beheer Groep. Those whose mother tongue is Dutch, have to pass a test administered by the University Language Centre by
appointment. If you have passed another Dutch language test (e.g. the Leuven-test, level "uitgebreid") or if Dutch was part
of your secondary school curriculum, check with the Centre if your proficiency in Dutch is sufficient. The University
Language Centre provides Dutch courses at several levels, especially designed for foreign students. The highest level
course ('examination course') prepares for the NT2-II-exam and is organised 3 times a year. It presupposes a certain level
of proficiency in Dutch (to be tested). The enrollment fee is Dfl. 730,-. Experience shows that it takes 6 to 12 months of
intensive language training before students who do not speak any Dutch are sufficiently proficient in this language to
benefit from the university courses and to pass the exams.
