The URL is a private status public service University that is part of the Catalan University System,
which aims to provide quality, person-centred training to provide a response to the
Needs of society. The URL is working so that the alternative that it represents reaches most of the fields of Science,
Technology and the Humanities in university training, with new contributions year after year, making it possible for
new students to choose a different option and different studies in line with the challenges demanded by modern society.
The University does all it can so that the possibility to choose is not a privilege reserved for those in a particular
financial situation. In this way, the URL opens its doors to anyone wishing to take part in its university training
project, studying any of the diploma courses, degree courses, doctorate and masters and postgraduate programmes it
currently offers. The courses are given in its centres, with a long teaching tradition and experience behind them.
These centres dedicate continuous efforts to strike an adequate balance between the training contents and the study
plans and new technologies, and promote interesting programmes of practical experience for the students. In 1998, 12.543
students enrilled at the URL.

- History and mission statement
History
The Ramon Llull University (URL) began its teaching activity in October 1991 after being recognised by a Bill of the
Parliament de Catalunya (Catalan Regional Parliament), by unanimous vote. Its legal status is that of a private non
profit-making foundation. The URL encompasses a series of federated further education centres with a long history in
Catalonia. Its founding centres are: the current Facultat Eclesiàstica de Filosofia de Catalunya (Ecclesiastic Philosophy
Faculty), which goes back to the last century; the Institut Quimic de Sarrià (Chemical Institute), which began its
universitary activity in 1916; the Fundació Blanquerna with its Escola de Magisteri (Teacher Training College), which was
set up half a century ago, and Enginyeria La Salle (Engineering) which has been running for thirty years. On the 10th of
October 1989 these institutions, along with the Cardenal Narcís Jubany, the Fundación Círculo Economía, with the support
of representative figures from Catalan society, set up the Foundation which created the University. At present the
Foundation, through its Management Board, is the supreme governing body of the University. The URL has a federal structure
which underscores the personality of the centres which make it up. This working method allows it to reach its objectives
with the greatest of agility, flexibility and adaptability. The URL is thus, at the dawn of the 21st Century, a study
option in line with the needs of an increasingly dynamic and demanding society. In the six years since it first opened
its doors, the Ramon Llull University has extended its activities. The Ebro Observatory has been progressively integrated
as a University Institute, and also ESADE (The Advanced School of Company Administration and Management), the University
School of Social Work - ICESB, the Pere Tarrés University School of Social Education and the URL has associated with the
Advanced School of Design - ESDI, in Sabadell. As a result of this evolution, the institutions have used their full
potential with the creation of new Faculties and Schools and have expanded their offer of academic courses on offer, which
now include 38 diplomas, degrees, engineering qualifications and the University’s own certificates.
Mission statement:
The aim of the URL is to offer quality, student-centred courses, training them to meert society’s needs. The training is
characterised by:
Teaching quality: the Ramon Llull University offers quality studies with a view to training students as professionals and
individuals. The content of the studies, the methods and the learning techniques, small groups and the close relationship
between students and teachers enhance the personal development that must accompany all professionals.
High level Innovation and Research: the Ramon Llull University is a new academic institution. However it is formed by
centres that have a solid academic tradition and prestige. Tradition and innovation join forces in our University. The
Ramon Llull University makes a great contribution to thought, culture, science and technological development, and also
collaborates with leading institutions and companies.
Service to society: by training the professionals that society needs, complementing academic training with practical work
experience in companies, paying the closest attention to graduate job opportunities by offering Employment Services and by
nurturing individual and collective reflection on our social context, enhancing the value of solidarity.
European vocation and international projection: the Ramon Llull University is open to an ever more globalised world, and at
the same time a deepening knowledge of our most immediate surroundings. It is at the service of Catalan society and is open
to other cultures and ways of life in Spain, Europe and throughout the world. Institutional connections and frequently
exchanges with prestigious universities throughout the world open the doors to many possibilities for collaboration.
Private initiative and social vocation: the Ramon Llull University promotes personalised further education from the values of
private initiative, and at the same time remains remote from all social or financial elitism. Our grants and aids mean that
no-one is excluded from the URL on financial grounds.
Christian inspiration: the URL promotes integral personal development based on a Christian concept of man, life and the
world, in the image of the Master Ramon Llull and his emblematic tree of science, which at the same time configures its
corporate image.

Location
Barcelona, located at the Mediterranean sea in the very north of the Spanish coast, is certainly the most cosmopolitan and
economically most active city in this country. It has always proved its will to be modern, to follow the latest
international tendencies or be ahead of them. To the tourist this is evident specially in its architecture, which so well
reflects the general approach to life in this always pulsating city. Of course, Barcelona has an old history, and there are
monuments of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods or still before, but most characteristic is what has been built
during the last, say, 100 years. Barcelona has been a center of Modernist architecture and is distinguished specially by
the works of genial Antoní Gaudí, who together with his great contemporaries gave new and exciting looks to it, but has
remained since then at the top of modernity.
