If the Golden Globes are indeed a good prediction for the upcoming Academy Awards in March, then the team behind A Beautiful Mind can already start celebrating. The film picked up four Golden Globes at this year's event, including Best Picture in the drama category and Best Screenplay. Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge was also successful, as they won the Golden Globe for Best Picture in the musical/comedy category besides two other awards. Oscar favorite Lord of The Rings ended the evening with empty hands, despite being nominated in four categories.

Russel Crowe finally got his well-deserved first Golden Globe for his role in A Beautiful Mind, after losing to Denzel Washington in 2000 and to Tom Hanks in 2001. An other expected winner was Nicole Kidman for her dazzling performance in Moulin Rouge. She was also nominated in the drama category for her role in The Others, where she was defeated by Sissy Spacek (In The Bedroom). Best actor in the musical/comedy category was Gene Hackman (The Royal Tenenbaums). Jim Broadbent and Jennifer Connely won the Golden Globe for best supporting role for their performances in Iris and A Beautiful Mind respectively.

Despite his long and great career Robert Altman won only his first Golden Globe for Best Director. After nominations for MASH, Nashville, The Player and Short Cuts he was finally rewarded for Gosford Park. Not Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain but No Mans Land from Bosnian director Danis Tanovic was the Best Foreign Language film. That may have been a surprise to a lot of people. Harrison Ford received the special Cecil B. DeMille award, as he was honoured for his whole career.
