     Coimbra Group Hospitality Scheme

Practical Information for Exchange Students

What is the Hospitality Scheme?

Universities of the Coimbra Group of Universities offer short-term visits to scholars from non-accession countries in the Balkan region: Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Aim

The main aims of the scheme are to enable scholars to undertake research on which they are engaged in their home institution and to help them to establish academic and research links.

Eligibility

The scheme is intended for younger academics (normally those under the age of 35). Applicants should be current or recent staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution, and, in most cases, should be of postdoctoral or equivalent status, although some institutions may offer opportunities to doctoral students. Candidates not currently working in a university should continue to be involved in academic activity and be intending to return to university employment in the future.

Applicants must have sufficient skill in a relevant European Union language to be able to benefit from their stay.

Terms of the award

The duration of the stay will usually be one month but in some cases universities may offer longer visits. Visiting scholars will normally be provided with a working place and access to internet facilities. They will also be given access to such other university facilities as appropriate for their work, depending upon availability at the host institution.

Participating universities will offer accommodation and meals (or an adequate stipend to cover these expenses), and in some cases also funds for minimal day-to day expenses/pocket money. The precise terms of the award will vary between universities and further details are given below. Visiting scholars, or their institutions, will normally be expected to meet travel costs, although in special cases some assistance may be considered.

Application Procedure and Selection

Application form to be downloaded here.

Candidates should indicate on the application form the university or universities by which they wish to be considered. It will not normally be possible to visit more than one Coimbra Group University under this scheme.

The completed application form should be returned either be returned direct to the Coimbra Group Office (60, rue de la Concorde, B-1050 Brussels). The application must include two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant's work. The letters of recommendation should be confidential (not seen by the candidate) and attached to the application in sealed envelopes. The applicants should ensure that their referees are aware of this requirement. The closing dates will be 15 May 2002 for attachments in the Autumn semester 2002 and 15 October 2002 for attachments in the Spring semester 2003.

A preliminary selection of candidates will be undertaken by the Coimbra Group Hospitality Scheme Committee in each university to eliminate those candidates who do not meet the eligibility criteria. The final selection of candidates will be undertaken by the relevant faculty or department of the host institution.. Candidates who are not accepted by one of their chosen universities may be considered by other universities which still have places remaining if their proposed research project and linguistic competence are appropriate.

When selection has been agreed, the host university will send a letter of invitation directly to the successful candidate. The Coimbra Group Office will contact candidates who are not successful in obtaining a place under the scheme.

Successful candidates who are currently employed by a University are responsible for ensuring that their home institution will grant them leave of absence to undertake the proposed visit.
