TEMPUS Practical information for exchange students TEMPUSThe TEMPUS programme was established in 1990 and is now entering its third phase: TEMPUS III will run until the end of 2006. More information can be found on the website of the European Training Foundation. TEMPUS/CARDSWhat is TEMPUS/CARDS?TEMPUS/CARDS is part of the global CARDS programme for economic and social reconstruction and development in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The TEMPUS programme focuses on the rebuilding of educational structures. Most of the original TEMPUS/CARDS countries have acceded to the Socrates programme. These countries are: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Bulgaria and Slovenia. They are welcome to participate in TEMPUS/CARDS projects, but are no longer eligible for TEMPUS funding. The remaining TEMPUS/CARDS countries are Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. K.U.Leuven participationK.U.Leuven has been very active in the TEMPUS/CARDS programme right from the start. In all, our university has coordinated some 15 TEMPUS/CARDS projects and participated in over 40 projects as a partner. We are currently coordinating 2 projects in Albania, and are a partner in a further 12 projects in other countries. TEMPUS/TacisWhat is TEMPUS/Tacis?TEMPUS/Tacis is a part of the global Tacis programme for the development of political and economic contacts between the European Union and the New Independent Sates (ex-Soviet Union) and Mongolia. The TEMPUS component focuses on the restructuring of the higher education systems in these countries. It funds reform and development of curricula and facilities, and the upgrading of university management. At the moment, the eligible countries are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, the Russian Federation, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. K.U.Leuven participationK.U.Leuven has always played an active role in the TEMPUS/Tacis programme. Overall, we have coordinated about 8 projects and have been a partner in over 20 projects. Our university currently participates in 2 projects in the Russian Federation. TEMPUS/MEDA
