Celebration of 25 Years of Coimbra Group

1 - 2 February 2010

bannerIn 1985 the rectors from the universities of Louvain-la-Neuve and Leuven invited a group of historical European universities outside capital cities to come to a meeting to discuss the possible creation of a European University Network. The meeting of representatives from nine universities in October 1985 led to the creation of the Coimbra Group, named after the first General Assembly held in Coimbra the following year.  The Foundation Charter was signed by twenty universities at the General Assembly in Pavia in 1987.

We have the honour of inviting the now 38 Coimbra Group universities and the mayors of Coimbra Group university cities to come to Leuven again to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Coimbra Group and to discuss the impact of their universities on the regions and cities of which they form an integral part.

The celebrations will be held on 1 February 2010 and will be combined with the annual Dies Natalis celebration and academic procession on 2 February 2010.  An Academic Session will be held in the afternoon of 1 February 2010 in which Lord Broers, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Ms. Danuta Hübner, Chairwomen of the Committee on Regional Development in the European Parliament, have accepted to take the floor.
