Interfaculty Council for Development Cooperation(in Dutch: ‘Interfacultaire Raad voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking’)or, in short, ‘IRO’
Members
- Each faculty appoints two members: one representative and one substitute. The members are expected to:
- have relevant experience in the field of development cooperation and play an active part in it;
- confer with the other members of their faculty and keep in mind the faculty’s point of view when decisions are made;
- pass information from IRO on to the faculty they represent and vice versa.
- There are also 2 student representatives and some observers

Tasks and Responsibilities
IRO was set up in 1969 by the Academic Council as an advisory board, bringing together representatives from all K.U.Leuven faculties. As such, IRO has the task to outline the university’s policy on development cooperation.
Scope
- Selection of 15 new PhD scholarships per year
- Selection for travel grants for Flemish and European students to the South
- IRO wishes to stimulate the university’s faculties and individuals to take initiatives in the field of development cooperation
- IRO advises the Steering committee for Internationalization concerning the institutional policy on development cooperation in the widest sense of the word
Funding
- Doctoral scholarships
- Specialization grants for a maximum of 3 months (application form to be sent in by the K.U.Leuven promotor)
- Travelling allowances(application form, to be sent in by the K.U.Leuven promotor)
- Cooperation with Congo (application form in Dutch or French, to be sent in by the K.U.Leuven promotor)
