IUC Programme: objectives and main features

General objective

Empowering the local university as an institution to better fulfil its role as a development actor in society
This objective is to be attained through the implementation of a coherent set of interventions, guided by the strategic plan of the partner university, aimed at improving institutional policies and management and the quality of local education, research and social service delivery.

Main features of the IUC partner programme
  • A long-term collaboration with a limited number of selected universities geared towards institutional development.
  • Well-elaborated phase-in, phase-out and ex-post partner programme opportunities.
  • Financing and facilitation of co-operation (Partnership), not budget support.
  • Content based on a match between the priorities of the partner university and the interest and expertise offered by the Flemish counterparts.
  • Demand-initiated leading to a joint programme based on partnership.
  • Two successive five-year partner programmes with an earmarked overall budget of over € 6,000,000
  • Average annual budget: € 745,000 of which some € 650,000 is operational.
  • 7 years full budget, thereafter declining to 85%, 75% and 50%.
  • Extensive post-partner programme support facilities.
  • The creation of North-South and (North)-South-South networks.
  • Overall duration: 17 years.

Administrative procedure for a stay at K.U.Leuven

Three months before the arrival of the visitor or student, a filled-out IUC-form should be sent to Christel Van Cauwenbergh at the International Office. Ms Van Cauwenbergh will make sure that all the necessary arrangements are made regarding, among other things, admission and visa procedures, obtaining an official invitation letter from K.U.Leuven, housing, scholarship payment and getting settled in Leuven.
