International educational programme - EU-Canada
General information
An official agreement was signed in October 1995 providing for a cooperation programme between the European Union and Canada in the area of higher education and training. Between 1996 and 2001, a total of 32 projects were approved. K.U.Leuven participated in one project in 1996 (Victimization, Mediation and Restorative Justice).
The new EC/Canada agreement renewing the Cooperation Programme entered into force on 1 March 2001 for a period of five years (2001-2005). K.U.Leuven co-ordinated one EU/Canada project, along with the University of Regina (GLOBUS - Social Justice and Human Rights in the Era of Globalisation); and participated in one project (FACDEV - Promoting faculty development to enhance the quality of learning in higher education). The project was co-ordinated by the Université Catholique de Louvain and by McGill University.
In 2006, Canada and the European Union renegotiated the long-standing programme which will run for an additional eight years (2006-2013). The new agreement enables the continuation of activities such as the development of curricula, international internships, exchanges and study abroad with provision for credit recognition.
Actions of the programme
A new call for proposals will fund joint study and/or training programmes allowing transatlantic exchanges between European and Canadian education institutions. The transatlantic mobility activities will benefit to higher education students, vocational education and training learners and teachers/trainers/administrative staff in the framework of joint study programmes, underpinned by appropriate arrangements for mutual credit recognition, language and cultural preparation, and the necessary services and facilities.
The TEP projects must, therefore, be student-centred rather than oriented towards research collaboration between partners. The main focus of activities must be on transatlantic rather than intra-European or intra-Canadian interactions.
Higher education institutions and to vocational education and training institutions can submit a proposal. European eligible institutions must be established in one of the 27 Member States of the European Union.
New call: call 2009
The budget available for the co-financing of projects is estimated at EUR 1.104 million. It is anticipated that approximately 8 projects will be funded in 2009. The maximum amount of funding on the EU side will be EUR 138.000 for a 3-year consortium project. Projects activities are planned to start in September 2009 and last for 36 months.
