AGE
Prof. Dr. Filip Boen

Research Areas: promotion of physical activity among the elderly, issues of identity among the elderly / nationalities /merging organisations
Prof. Dr. Ann Heylighen
Research Areas: Our research explores how the spatial experience of people with diverse perspectives and conditions can be disclosed and inspire architects to rethink the design of space. The European Research Council awarded us a Starting Grant for the project AIDA - Architectural design In Dialogue with disAbility , which combines the expertise of researchers in architecture and sociology/anthropology, disabled people and professional architects. AIDA forms the framework for more specific (PhD) projects, focusing on the spatial experience of people born blind, people with autism, (bedridden) patients in hospital environments, and older people with and without dementia.

Persons with a disability
- Quality of life and quality of support
- Persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities
- Ageing persons with a disability
- Persons with an intellectual disability and behavioral or emotional problems
Research Areas: The research in our group is focused on different aspects of quality of life and quality of support for persons with a disability. This includes the theoretical conceptualisation of ‘quality of life’ and ‘quality of care’, the development of tools and evaluation procedures, and the evaluation of quality of life and quality of care for disabled persons in different living situations. Specific areas of interest are communication and interaction, adapted activities and supporting parents and direct care staff. We have chosen for some specific target groups in our research: persons with profound multiple disabilities; ageing persons with an intellectual disability; behavioural and emotional problems of persons with a disability.
GENDER
Prof. Dr. Elke D'Hoker

Research Areas: My expertise is situated on the domains of (a) modern and contemporary fiction in English, (b) feminist literary criticism and (c) narrative theory. My current research deals with the short story by women writers, both from a formal angle (questions of genre, stylistics and narrative structure) and from a thematic perspective, with a focus on questions of (gendered) identity, connection and community, ethics and alterity.
INTERCULTURALISM
Prof. Dr. Filip Boen

Research Areas: promotion of physical activity among the elderly, issues of identity among the elderly / nationalities /merging organisations
Prof. Dr. Maddy Janssens

Research Areas: Our research explores the different dynamics of a diverse workforce, its impact on minority employees and ways in which organization manage diversity. Recent projects have focused on diversity management practices of small and medium-sized companies and their impact on feelings of inclusion of ethnic minority employees in operative jobs, subtle discrimination experienced by ethnic minority professionals, and sense-making of diversity among different organizational actors. We are particularly interested in how interpersonal dynamics and organizational practices challenge or reproduce existing inequality in the organization and society at large.
