Roger_Lijnen Roger Lijnen, PhD

Roger Lijnen is Chairman of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Medicine of the University of Leuven, which hosts three research groups:

  • The Center for Molecular and Vascular Biology – Director: Roger Lijnen – located at Campus Gasthuisberg O&N1
  • The Center for Transgene Technology and Gene Therapy – Director: Désiré Collen – located at Campus Gasthuisberg O&N1
  • The Division of Molecular Medicine – Head: Zeger Debyser – located at the St. Raphael Hospital

Roger Lijnen obtained a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry in 1978 at the University of Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), Belgium.  Following a brief post-doc period at the University of Umea (Sweden), he was appointed Docent in 1989 and Professor in 1995 at the University of Leuven.

Roger Lijnen presently serves as Director of the Center for Molecular and Vascular Biology of the University of Leuven, and as Executive Director of the International Society for Fibrinolysis and Proteolysis.  He is member of the Council of the International Fibrinogen Research Society, of the Editorial Board of the Haemostasis Forum and of the Senior Advisory Council of the Scientific and Standardization Committee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

He has been awarded several scientific awards from the Royal Academy of Medicine, Belgium (including the Prize Dr. and Mrs. Schamelhout-Koettlitz in 1981, the Prize Dr. Karel Verleysen in 1994 and the Glaxo Smith Kline Prize for Medical Research in 2002), the Prize of the Foundation A. Faes in 1985, and awards from international organizations, such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Thrombose- und Hämostaseforschung (1986), the Société Française d’Hématologie (1988) and the International Society for Fibrinolysis and Thrombolysis (1996).  He also received the Investigator Recognition Award of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (2001).

His research interests comprise fibrinolysis/thrombolysis, atherosclerosis and obesity.  He has (co-) authored 275 research papers and 30 review articles in international peer-reviewed journals, and over 80 chapters in text books.  These publications have been cited over 11,000 times.  In addition, he has presented over 140 invited lectures at international congresses, symposia and workshops, including plenary and state-of-the-art lectures.
