Doelstelling

The prevalence of neurological disorders will dramatically grow during the coming decennia and is likely to represent a major burden to health care systems of Western societies. The unravelling of the  pathogenesis of these disorders and the development of therapies for them is a major task for basic and clinical neuroscience research, to which CSL Behring intends to contribute through the installation of the E. von Behring Chair in Neuromuscular and Neurodegenerative Disorders.
Axonal degeneration is a common theme of degenerative and inflammatory disorders affecting the peripheral and central nervous system. Examples are Alzheimer disease, Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Charcot-Marie-Tooth’s disease, but also multiple sclerosis and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. While immunological mechanisms have always been considered characteristic for inflammatory diseases, recent evidence shows that an immune-mediated component is also involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease and that it may even represent a therapeutic target.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is degenerative disease affecting the peripheral motor neuron. This fatal disorder is one of the most dramatic diseases known to modern medicine. Axonal degeneration and a glial “inflammatory” reaction in the spinal cord are characteristics of this motor neuron disease for which no curative treatment is available. The E. von Behring Chair in Neuromuscular and Neurodegenerative Disorders is intended to promote basic and clinical research into the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, to add to our understanding of motor axon degeneration and neuro-inflammation in general, and to contribute to the development of a treatment for this dreadful disease.
