Aims

  • To be able to give a critical evaluation of recent Church history
  • To be able to approach Vatican II as a dynamic process. Firstly to see the council as an 'event' with its effect on the evolution of the Church. Secondly to to see the conciliar documents as the result of theological and ecclesiological discussions
  • To learn to deal with literature and sources regarding the Council and the postconciliar period
  • To develop skills in a historical-critical approach of Church and theology.

Content

The course deals with the history of the Second Vatican Council, its preconditions and its aftermath. It contains three parts:
1. The Church at the eve of the Council
2. The Council: preparation and development
3. Postconciliar developments.
