Introduction to the methodology of organology, to acquire knowledge concerning the technical and musical qualities of the main instruments from Western musical history.

Methodology of organology; historic overview of the systematics. Extensive introduction to the key-instruments, in which great attention is given to the instrument which is the mirror of Western musical history, the organ. Discussion of the various instrument groups and instruments, with stress on the principles of instumentation and orchestration. Introduction to the problems of the tunings. Course activities
Lectures with sound- and imagedocumentation. Active participation of the students in the discussion of the aesthetic aspects is expected. Practical sessions round one instrument. Students who wish so, can make a report on a chosen subject from the study of musical instruments (a musical instrument, acoustics, social significance, technique, etc) along with a written summary. This report is evaluated at the presentation. The students are not examined on the reading material.

Explanation
Trying to determine the synthetic knowledge on the subjects discussed: some main questions will give the student the opportunity to present his vision on the problems discussed. The knowledge of essential technical terms is determined in quid-questions.
