Aims
The aim of this course is to train mathematics teachers who are responsible for teaching mathematics to junior secondary as well as senior secondary school pupils (junior secondary pupils: 14 – 16 years old; senior secondary pupils: 16 – 18years old). The objectives can be divided into the following three strands: - amplification of mathematical knowledge:
reflection over the meaning as well as the acquisition of mathematical knowledge, reflection over the nature of mathematics and mathematical activities resulting in principles of educational practice. Insight into the different stages of abstraction, becoming acquainted with historic development, coherence and meaning of important mathematical theories. Application of this knowledge when analysing syllabi as well as selecting and constructing sequences of lessons.- a basic understanding of the contemporary framework of mathematics education and the ability to utilise this knowledge when preparing lessons for junior and secondary school mathematics.
- control over the organization of mathematics lessons: managing adjusted forms of work, using educational aids, designing worksheets and organizing learning activities, integrating information technology into mathematics education.
Content
- Starts from deductive theory towards towards a more (for pupils) meaningful construction of this theory:
Discussions are linked to
- the subject of mathematics and its historical development.
- elements of the psychology of learning (mental objects versus concepts).
- Important trends in mathematics education, amongst others: realistic mathematics education, structuralistic and empirical education, the genetic principle and mathematics education starting from applications.
Acquainting students with basic literature in mathematics education. Acquainting students with the effect of educational principles on textbook writing (comparison of a few textbook series from different countries).- General aims of mathematics education.
Mathematics and other sciences, mathematics and culture, mathematics and society.- Objectives and syllabi (international).
An outline of mathematics education in Flanders. Developments. Overview of syllabi: main lines of algebra, geometry, analysis, statistics. An example of year planning.- Different forms of work (lectures, questioning, assignments…) and organization of learning activities (attention not only to acquirement of knowledge, but also to motivation and other elements that guide the learning process).
Development of material. Forms of representing knowledge: formulae and symbols, graphic representations, verbal representations.- Teaching aids (transparencies, calculators, graphic calculators, mathematics software)
Use of information technology in mathematics education.- Preparation of lessons: Selection of material from textbooks – Structure.
- Discussion of lesson plans. Examples of model lessons. Exercise in lesson preparation.
- Observation of pupils (video lessons).
- Types of evaluation and implementation strategies.
- Professional requirements for a mathematics teacher.
