2009-2010: Ancient views on Friendship
Texts discussed will include Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Bk 8-9, Cicero's Laelius de amicitia, and Augustine's De diversis quaestionibus, quaestio 71.
The seminar will be co-organised with the university of Cologne
(Germany). There will be two one-day sessions, one in Leuven and one in
Cologne (dates to be announced). The trip to Cologne will be organised
by the De Wulf-Mansion Centre so as to allow all students to attend.

Course activities

Students have:

• to read and translate the texts.
• to prepare an oral presentation, that consists in a close reading of a part of the text, plus doctrinal explanation and contextualisation. Students are required to do some independent research for this presentation.
• to present the results of their oral presentation (and of the discussion) in a paper.
