Internal CasADi course: 23-24 November 2011

On 23-24 November 2011 we will organize an internal two-day tutorial course on how to use the at OPTEC developed tool CasADi to solve nonlinear programming problems and optimal control problems. The course will start with a 1.5 hour introductory lecture to different methods used for optimal control. This lecture will be given by Moritz Diehl and is open for everyone to attend without any prior registration. It will be given at ESAT, Auditorium A.

The rest of the course will consist of tutorials and will take place at the Instutuut voor Plantkunde (behind the ESAT building) and is limited to 15 participants (subject to change) to ensure that we can give proper supervision. If necessary we are willing to repeat the exercise sessions for a second batch of students.

The computer excersises will take place on the students' own laptops and will use CasADi's Python front-end (you might want to follow a simple Python tutorial before the course if you have never used the language before). The participants are encouraged to work on the exercises in pairs (if you don't have a laptop, make sure to pair up with someone who has). Importantly, we will assume that CasADi has already been installed, including it's Python front-end and interfaces to Sundials and IPOPT. You will find installation instructions on www.casadi.org. To get a Matlab-like environment, we recommend to use the Spyder IDE. There will be no time to install CasADi during the course but if you have problems installing the tool we will be willing to help out the days before the event.

The first day of course will be dedicated to working with symbolics, ODE/DAE integration along with forward and adjoint sensitivity analysis and NLP solution using IPOPT. The second day (which is optional but encouraged) will deal with dynamic optimization using direct collocation as well as single and multiple shooting.

A more detailed schedule will be available soon.

Registration for the excercises, on a first-come-first serve basis, are done out by mailing Joel Andersson ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) but no later than 16 November. Make sure that you receive an email confirmation.

Best regards,

Joel on behalf of the CasADi team

Newsflash

Two OPTEC professors have been awarded three "Gouden Krijtjes", the yearly teaching awards given by the organization of engineering students (vtk). Prof. Lombaert was awarded the prize for the best course in civil engineering, and Prof. Diehl the prizes for the best professor and the best course in mathematical engineering (where he teaches numerical optimization). They received these awards at the yearly "proffentap" where experienced students taught them how to draft beer professionally.
