OPTEC-MaNet Seminar on "Distributed network estimation and control problems" - Moritz Diehl & Attila Kozma

Thu 15 Jul 2010 10:00-12:00, ESAT Aud. A
"Introduction into gradient type optimization schemes and dual decomposition"

Speakers: Moritz Diehl & Attila Kozma, K.U.Leuven Optimization in Engineering Center (OPTEC) Discussant: Bruno Defraene
Aim of this introductory talk is to outline the main ideas of gradient based schemes for (convex) optimization. We start by looking at unconstrained quadratic problems and how they can be solved by gradient and conjugate gradient methods. We also outline the idea of dual decomposition for equality constrained problems, report on augmented Lagrangian methods. When inequalities are involved, we report on gradient projection type algorithms and Nesterov's optimal gradient schemes.

Newsflash

Two OPTEC professors have been awarded three "Gouden Krijtjes", the yearly teaching awards given by the organization of engineering students (vtk). Prof. Lombaert was awarded the prize for the best course in civil engineering, and Prof. Diehl the prizes for the best professor and the best course in mathematical engineering (where he teaches numerical optimization). They received these awards at the yearly "proffentap" where experienced students taught them how to draft beer professionally.
