"Parameter estimation and optimum experimental design with an adaptive method of lines"

 Le Zhang, University of Heidelberg

This talk is about the utilization of an adaptive method of lines, so-called moving finite element method (MFEM), in the context of optimization with time-dependent partial differential equation systems as constaints, which may exhibit a high degree of spatial transition. The talk will be divided into two main parts. In the first one I will introduce the basic idea and mathematical theory of MFEM. Subsequently in the second part some selected numerical tests will be presented in the fields of simulation, parameter estimation and optimum experimental design, respectively.

Newsflash

Two OPTEC professors have been awarded three "Gouden Krijtjes", the yearly teaching awards given by the organization of engineering students (vtk). Prof. Lombaert was awarded the prize for the best course in civil engineering, and Prof. Diehl the prizes for the best professor and the best course in mathematical engineering (where he teaches numerical optimization). They received these awards at the yearly "proffentap" where experienced students taught them how to draft beer professionally.
