FITCE.be, the Belgian branch of the Forum for European ICT professionals, recently organized the contest for the "Young ICT Personality 2010" award. The first price was awarded to Paschalis Tsiaflakis, based on his scientific work and his finalist presentation on the theme "The Internet: Past & Future" (with two other finalists).
Paschalis presented his research work on Green DSL, that he developed during his PhD under supervision of Prof. Marc Moonen and in close collaboration with Prof. Mung Chiang from Princeton University (NJ, USA) and Prof. Yung Yi from KAIST University (South Korea). Green DSL consists of a general modeling framework with corresponding powerful optimization algorithms, so called dynamic spectrum management algorithms, that can be used to optimize system configurations so as to spectacularly decrease the energy consumption of future ADSL/VDSL connections, while preserving very high data rates. The presented Green DSL technology can be seen as an important step towards obtaining a greener Internet.
