Maarten De Vos was born on July 16, 1983 in Belgium. During his high school years, he studied Latin-Greek and later Latin-Mathematics at the st- Romboutscollege in Mechelen. At the royal conservatory of Brussels, Maarten received a 'premier prix du violon' (2002) and a 'premier prix de musique de chambre'(2003). In 2005 Maarten received his master degree in Electrotechnical-Mechanical Engineering, option Biomedical Techniques at the K.U.Leuven. Together with Bart Verheyden he wrote a master thesis on tissuesegmentation and classification of MRSI data using canonical correlation analysis. Currently, Maarten is a PhD student at SISTA of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT).

Two OPTEC professors have been awarded three "Gouden Krijtjes", the yearly teaching awards given by the organization of engineering students (vtk). Prof. Lombaert was awarded the prize for the best course in civil engineering, and Prof. Diehl the prizes for the best professor and the best course in mathematical engineering (where he teaches numerical optimization). They received these awards at the yearly "proffentap" where experienced students taught them how to draft beer professionally.
