His research deals with intelligent data mining techniques for the monitoring and control of chemical and biochemical batch processes.
Using data-driven modelling techniques, the batch-end quality of a product can be predicted, before any lab analyses are available, even if no direct online quality measurements are available(physically impossible or too costly,...). Additionally, process disturbances and faults can be detected during the batch operation, and the distinction between critical (i.e., influencing the final quality) and non-critical faults (i.e., not influencing the final quality...yet) can be made.
Current research focusses on automatically and correctly identifying the source of the process disturbances, and on the practical implementation of data-driven models on existing reactors.

Two OPTEC professors have been awarded three "Gouden Krijtjes", the yearly teaching awards given by the organization of engineering students (vtk). Prof. Lombaert was awarded the prize for the best course in civil engineering, and Prof. Diehl the prizes for the best professor and the best course in mathematical engineering (where he teaches numerical optimization). They received these awards at the yearly "proffentap" where experienced students taught them how to draft beer professionally.
